Looking for a quick recipe to make to take to holiday parties this year? This Peppermint Muddy Buddies recipe only takes 15 minutes to make and is so yummy!

I came up with this Reindeer Chow recipe years ago and have been making it for my kids each Christmas ever since. In fact, I first published it back in 2010 on my A Heart Full of Love blog. I have since I re-branded and am in the process of moving all of my craft and recipe posts over here at Craft a Happy Home. Since it is Christmas time, I thought it was a great time to re-visit that Christmas Muddy Buddies recipe. (And get a little nostalgic – those little girls in the picture below are now teenagers. How time flies!)

I originally came up with this recipe because my kids love Muddy Buddies and I wanted to make the recipe more Christmas-y! Since candy canes are a holiday staple in this house, I decided to crush some with my marble rolling pin (great stress relief) and add some to my regular recipe.

The first batch wasn’t minty enough, so the next time I made it, I added some food-grade peppermint oil to the melted chocolate. The resulting candy cane muddy buddy recipe is the perfect blend of mint and chocolate. Absolutely yummy! It’s a great snack mix to make for holiday parties and get-togethers. The best part is you can throw it together in about 15 minutes flat!

The most time consuming part of this Christmas muddy buddy recipe is crushing the candy canes. You know that scene from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation where Clark Griswald has the magazine pages stuck to his hand? Well, that was me after unwrapping and crushing all those candy canes! The candy cane wrappers were sticking to my hands and I couldn’t fling them off no matter how hard I tried. The girls thought it was quite hysterical!

Ingredients needed to make peppermint puppy chow recipe for Christmas.
You will need the following to make this Reindeer Chow Recipe:

  • 1/2 cup crushed candy canes
  • 9 Cups Chex Cereal (any variety)
  • 12 oz bag of chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2-4 drops peppermint oil
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

A quick note about the peppermint flavoring: I used food-grade natural peppermint oil. This is strong stuff!! You only need 2-4 drops. It comes in a tiny little bottle. If you are using peppermint extract, try 1/4 to 1/2 tsp.

Crush peppermint candy canes to use in the Christmas Muddy Buddies recipe. It only takes 15 minutes to make!

Start by crushing your candy canes. I recommend putting the candy canes into a thick freezer bag for this to help minimize the mess. I have a heavy marble rolling pin that works perfect for crushing candy canes, but a hammer works just as well. Just be sure to protect your table or countertop. Or if you use the mini candy canes, you can make quick work of pulverizing them with your food processor.

Next you want to measure out 9 cups of Chex cereal into a large bowl. I used Rice Chex because that is what I had, but other varieties of Chex would work as well.

Melting the chocolate to make the peppermint Christmas Muddy Buddy recipe.

Melt the chocolate chips and butter in a double boiler, stirring until smooth. You can also melt them in the microwave for about 30 seconds at a time.

Adding the peppermint extract to the Candy Cane Muddy Buddies recipe - a perfect snack for Christmas.

After the chocolate chips are melted and smooth, remove from the heat and add 2-4 drops peppermint oil. Pour slowly. It is very easy to dump too much. Ask me what recipe I ruined figuring that out! Those little bottles really need an eyedropper. Anyway… You might want to start with 2 drops and taste it before you add anymore. It doesn’t take much of the oil at all to flavor the chocolate.

Once you have the chocolate minty enough, pour it over the Chex cereal. Toss it well so that all the cereal is coated in chocolate. Add the powdered sugar and continue tossing it until all is well-coated. Gently stir in the crushed candy canes. (You might want to save some to use as garnish for a pretty presentation.)
