Looking for an easy Valentine’s Day gift for your kids? These pom pom love bugs are quick to make and super cute. Add some candy and you have an inexpensive gift to surprise your kids with on Valentine’s Day.
Ever since my kids were little, it has been tradition to have a little gift to sit at their place setting for our special Valentine’s Day dinner. One year, I made them all Valentine yarn love bugs. They loved them and we still put them out every year with our Valentine’s decorations.
All you need to make this easy Valentines Day craft is some plastic canvas scraps, yarn, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes. You can easily make a couple while you are watching tv in the evening.
Valentine Pom Pom Love Bug Supplies Needed
- 7 count plastic canvas
- red or pink yarn
- 1-1/2 to 2 inch pom pom (if you don’t want to make your own)
- Small Clover Pom Pom Maker (optional, if you want to make your own)
- (2) 18 mm googly eyes
- white pipe cleaners
- hot glue gun
Heart Plastic Canvas Patterns
The first step in making these Valentine yarn love bugs is cutting and stitching the plastic canvas. The larger heart will serve as the base and the love bug’s feet. The two smaller hearts will serve as antenna toppers.
Cut the hearts from 7 count plastic canvas, according to the pattern above. You will need to cut one of the larger hearts and two of the smaller hearts.
Using red yarn (or the color of your choice), fill the plastic canvas hearts according to the pattern above. The stitch used is the continental (half cross-stitch).
Using the same color yarn, overcast all the edges. Set the hearts aside while you make the pom pom.
How to Make Fluffy Pom Poms With a Pom Pom Maker
This step is optional if you prefer to use store-bought pom poms. If you buy pom poms, you will need one that is between 1-1/2″ and 2″ in size.
However, it is super easy to make your own pom poms with the Clover Pom Pom Maker. The benefit of making your own is that you aren’t limited to the colors of pom poms sold in craft stores. You can even make cool multi-colored pom poms – more on that below. Homemade pom poms only take about 5 minutes to make.
Although there are many methods to make homemade pom poms (cardboard donut, a fork, your fingers, etc), I have found that you get more consistent results by using an actual pom pom maker.
I have tried a lot of pom pom makers and my favorite is the Clover pom pom maker. It’s quick and easy to use. If you don’t have a Clover pom pom maker, you can get a four pack of different sized Clover pom pom makers on Amazon here that includes Prime shipping.
Start by opening the arms of the pom pom maker. (There are two arms on each side.) Make sure that the arms are lined up completely. Leaving a 1 inch tail, evenly wrap the yarn around the bend in the arms on one side. You want to fill it in completely so that the yarn is even with the bottom of the arm. Cut a 1 inch tail.
Fold the arm back into the pom pom maker with both tails sticking out.
Repeat the process for the second set of arms.
Turn the pom pom maker on its side so you can see the channel. Using sharp scissors, cut the yarn all the way around the pom pom maker, using the channel to guide your scissors.
Cut a 9 inch or so length of yarn. Run the yarn in the channel and tie the two ends in a tight knot. This is what is going to hold your pom pom together so get it as tight as you can without breaking the yarn. Run the yarn through the channel around the to other side and tie another knot. Repeat this process a third time and tie a double knot.
Pull the arms out one by one. Then grasp the white ends and pull apart. This will remove your pom pom from the pom pom maker.
You will notice that your pom pom is a bit raggedy at this point. Use your fabric scissors to even up the strands. Spend a couple of minutes giving your pom pom a good trim to ensure that is neat looking.
Assembling the Pom Pom Love Bug
Heat up a hot glue gun. With the stitched side facing up, add a glob of hot glue to the center of the larger heart. Press the pom pom into the center.
The two hills on the top of the heart will act as the feet for your love bug. So that will be the front side where you want to add the eyes. Add hot glue to the back of the googly eyes and stick them to the front of the pom pom so they are touching in the center.
Cut (2) 2 inch lengths of pipe cleaner. Add hot glue to the end of one pipe cleaner and stick into the top of the pom pom above one of the eyes, referring to the above picture for placement. This will be one of the love bug’s antenna so you want it at a bit of an angle. Repeat the process for the other antenna.
Add a bit of hot glue to the end of one of the pipe cleaners and affix one of the smaller hearts. Repeat for the other antenna.
Valentines Day Love Bug Variations
You can give your yarn love bug a different look by changing up a few things. Here are some suggestions…
Add embellishments to your Valentine pom pom love bug.
Don’t be afraid the add some embellishments to your yarn love bug. I found some cute little plastic top hats that I added to one of the examples above. For the other one, I just used 3/8″ ribbon and tied a bow around one of the antenna.
Make multi-colored pom poms for your love bugs
By using specialty yarn to make your pom poms, you can give the love bug a completely different look. The love bug on the right was made with a variegated yarn. You can achieve the same look by wrapping different colors of yarn around your pom pom maker.
Another option is to use a specialty yarn. It is a little hard to tell from the picture, but the pink pom pom on the right has flecks of silver in it.
Make bigger pom poms
By using a lighter weight yarn, you can make slightly bigger pom poms because you can wrap the yarn around the pom pom maker more times. Baby weight yarn or Caron Simply Soft yarn both make nice fluffy pom poms that are a little bit bigger in size but still fit on the heart base.
